At the railway station
When you arrive at the railway station the first thing you need to do is to find the platform. Usually you have about half an hour to make yourself comfortable in your place in the train if your train is already at the station. You will not find specific markers for the location of your carriage (the number appears on your ticket in Russian or Ukrainian). The train will consist of many carriages, usually over 15. The SV carriage (Ukr and Rus CB) is located in the middle of train not far from the dining car. But also provide yourself with some food because not all trains have a dinning car... and more than twelve hours without eating is a long time! The numbers of carriages are shown on the window.
Right before entering your carriage you have to show your ticket to the conductor. People who accompany you and help you with your luggage are allowed to board. And all what you have to do then is just to find your compartment and your place in the carriage: upper seat or lower seat.
Getting to the railway station from the airport (Kiev)
-
Taxi - you will find taxis outside the terminal
-
Metro – there is no metro station in airport in Kiev.
-
Bus - every 30 minutes

Soon after train’s departure, the conductor will come to get your tickets. If you are travelling in night time he/she will ask if you want sheets (approximately 15 UAH) and if you do you will have to pay for them. But sometimes the sheets are included in the ticket price. This is the case of train No. 12 Kiev Simferopol.
Storage. The safest way to store your luggage is to put it in the space under the lower seat (but it works only if you are travelling on the lower, request for it at the time of ticket purchase). If you are travelling on the upper couch, keep your luggage with you in high storage which is above your upper couch.
Security
Be careful, thefts are common in trains. Do not leave coats, shoes in the sight of everyone, especially if you travel plastkart – 3rd class (without closed compartments). If you travel in SV or coupé close and lock the door for the night. If you travel alone and you have to leave your luggage in compartment simply to go to the bathroom or to eat at the dining car, ask the conductor to lock your coupé. Sleeping shelves. The controller passes through compartments distributing sheets, blankets, pillows and mattresses. The upper sleeping shelf can be placed in vertical position if it’s necessary. Food and drinks. Each compartment has a small table on which passengers can eat. It is normal to share the lower bench before dark. Most passengers bring their food and drinks with themselves. But also it is possible to order some tea, coffee, mineral water, crisps and beer from the conductor. You can ask him/her to keep a package in the fridge for a few UAH. Most trains have a dining car but food isn’t so good there. Because there are many train stops on the route so you’ll be able to buy some food and drinks near the stopping place (fruits, meat on a stick, pies, smoked fish, Crimean wine, etc.). Do not drink the tap water; it is not safe to drink. Toilet. Each car has two toilets that can be used before and after each stop. Usually the conductor locks the doors before arriving at stations. There is supposed to be toilet paper but bring your own just in case. Smoking and drinking alcohol... Many passengers bring their bottle of vodka and/or beer, just to pass the time. You can smoke but strictly only at the ends of the car. Sometimes women needed to change their clothes so may ask you to leave the compartment for a few minutes. Morning. If it is necessary the conductor will wake you up about 45 minutes before train arrives at the place of destination. You must return the sheets to conductor and fold-up your mattress. You can order a coffee or tea for a few UAH. Temperature. Sometimes it is the very hot in trains. You can ask to open the windows. Once I’ve had such situation. It was very hot in the compartment so I asked the woman who was working in our car to open the window. But she refused to do so. I wondered why? And she answered: “Because it’s winter”!

The Final Tips
It is best to choose a carriage in the middle of the train. The effect of "balance" will be less noticeable there than in other parts of the train! If you travel with only one other person and you want to have some privacy, we suggest you to travel in a compartment for 2 people called SV. On the other hand travelling in coupé is more fun and time goes by very fast… And the comfort is the same as SV.

The types of compartment
The first option is most comfortable but most expensive and not the most sociable. It is a compartment for two people only with two lower beds and a table next to the window. It is possible to buy two tickets and you will have the whole compartment for yourself. The interrelation quality/price is not the most interesting.
Each compartment has two lower berths and two upper berths. Like the SV, the compartments can be locked from the inside for your safety and comfort. It’s the best compromise and you'll be able to meet interesting people.
The least expensive: the car is "open": it has no closed compartments. We do not offer tickets for Platskart. For your attention: all the trains usually have air conditioners, but it may happen that some supplementary trains do not have air conditioning or it does not work.
